Biomedical Field-

A hydrogel with a three-dimensional culture and high water content has recently been demonstrated to be capable of connecting with cells so as to engineer various tissues in both Vivo and Vitro. There is a crucial requirement for the building of sufficient qualities of three-dimensional tissues that are regenerative. The requirement is an artificially created environment that will enable the biological cells to interact or grow with their surroundings.

A recent group study made a report that new cross-linking chemistry was successful in the formation of hydrogels for a 3-D cell culture. This study utilized the click reaction called tetrazine norbornene. Benzylamine tetrazine moiety and a PEG functionalized together and were specifically chosen because of previous work that proved that there was a high reactivity towards the norborne. Ideal reaction kinetics, bio-orthogonality, and the photochemical patterning amenability made this particular hydrogel platform develop potential applications in various fundamentals including translational tissue engineering applications.

Self-Healing

One of the most outstanding properties of natural materials, such as bones, skin, and wood, is self-healing. This outstanding reality is an indication that hydrogels and their relationship to self-healing will open up numerous biomedical applications. Synthetic hydrogels are made to mimic biological tissues but most the time they, unfortunately, lack the ability to self-heal. This drawback could limit their utilization in some of the applications that require high stress.

This is one of the reasons why many researchers are dedicating a lot of effort and time to improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels which includes self-healing. The process of healing a crack in a natural system will normally contain an energy dissipation mechanism. Self-healing will occur during the presence of sacrificial bonds which can reform and break dynamically during or before the failure occurs.

To prepare any self-healing hydrogel, both non-covalent and covalent interactions must be present. A researcher noticed that the synthesis of novel hydrogels contained a reversible oxime cross-link. These particular hydrogels were able to provide autonomous healing because of their dynamic nature. The researcher prepared these hydrogels by copolymerizing them. This produced an efficient self-healing ability and a reversible gel-to-sol transition.

Drug Delivery

Hydrogels have proven very effective for drug delivery. The porous structure of a hydrogel can provide an excellent matrix for drug loading. At the same time, this matrix will also help to protect a drug from any hostile environment. In addition, the porous structure of a hydrogel can be controlled by simply varying the density of the gel matrix when cross-linking.

Drug carriers rely upon a release rate that primarily depends on the diffusion coefficient. The molecule of the hydrogel has the ability to be tuned in accordance with specific requirements. Biodegradability and biocompatibility can be obtained by constructing a design for certain physical and chemical structures for hydrogels. All of these properties show that hydrogels have a tremendous potential when it comes to being used for drug delivery.

A Pluronic, or Poloxamer, has been extensively used in pharmaceutical systems. One researcher and his team fabricated an injectable gel that was based on a Poloxamer to control and carry the release of an anaesthetic agent called lidocaine. Even though Poloxamer was available commercially and utilize by hospitals, it nevertheless still had limitations. These limitations were investigated by other researchers as they tried to find ways to use hydrogels to load various drugs into a gel matrix. Eventually, they were successful in creating an injectable loaded hydrogel to distribute the drug doxorubicin.

A different study was recently done by Yamauchi and his co-workers. In this study, a hydrogel which contained cationic substituents was prepared by means of a free radical polymerization. The research team applied an aqueous amount of Micaromica to a surface. When this was introduced to the hydrogels, it produced a strong adhesion into the interlayers of Micromica because of the intercalation of the cationic substituents that were included in the hydrogels network. The adhesive strength became extremely strong and it was able to support an unbelievable tensile load. The tensile load capacity was an amazing 10 kg before the water content ratio of the hydrogels decreased.

Another interesting research study was done by a researcher named Loessner and his team. They focused in on a (GelMa) gelatin methacrylamide based hydrogel. This researcher and his team analyzed them as a Vivo and Vitro spheroid-based model for issues with ovarian cancer. They did this so that they could efficiently reflect on the advanced stage of the disease. Hydrogels of equal diffusion, size, and physical properties were generated by utilizing a validation and controlled preparation protocol. Obviously, there will be additional research in the future that will target how hydrogels will be able to achieve efficient and fast self-healing abilities, high mechanical strength, and different biological activities for a variety of biomedical purposes.

CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION

  1. Burning of Fossil fuels: Combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles emit sulfur dioxide which is the major cause of air pollution. Overuse of vehicles for transportation is killing our environment. Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels gives rise to carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which are another major pollutants of air.
  2. Agricultural activities: Insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers used in the agricultural activities give rise to ammonia which is one of the most hazardous gases in the atmosphere.
  3. Exhaust from factories and industries: These days manufacturing industries can be found in the every corner of earth and these industries release large amount carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, organic compounds and chemicals into the air and deplete the quality of air. Hydrocarbons released from petroleum refineries also adds to the air pollution.
  4. Mining operations: During the mining process to extract minerals below the earth, a lot of dust and chemicals are released in the air causing massive air pollution which also deteriorates the health conditions of workers and nearby residents.
  5. Indoor air pollution: Toxic chemicals are emitted during the household cleaning products, painting supplies etc. cause air pollution and makes it impossible to breathe. The suspended particulate matter caused by dust and combustion etc. is another cause of pollution.

HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION can be divided into two categories: 

Short-term Health effects

Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat as well upper respiratory infections like bronchitis are caused by the irritants from air pollution. Asthma, headache and nausea are few other health effects related to air pollution.

Long-term Health effects:

  1. Chronic respiratory diseases, lung cancer, heart diseases and damage to the nervous system, liver and kidneys are all related to serious health hazards of air pollution.
  2. Smog and Acid Rain: Release of toxic gases like sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides can lead to smog and acid rain, when these gases undergo chemical reactions in the air. Smog and acid rain have detrimental health effects and can damage plants, soil and bodies of water.
  3. Agriculture and forests: Crops and forests get damaged because of air pollution which can contaminate and destroy the food supply. Air pollution slows the growth of the forests and can even cause them to die which brings imbalance in the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the environment.
  4. Global warming: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, nitric oxide are greenhouse gases, which traps the heat from the sun and increases the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. This can lead to dramatic climate changes on the whole earth’s ecosystem like increased temperatures worldwide, increase in sea levels, melting of icebergs, displacement and loss of habitats.
  5. Eutrophication: High amount of nitrogen from the nearby agricultural lands and from other pollutants enters into the water bodies like lake, seas and oceans. This leads to excessive growth of green colored algae in them which adversely affect the fish, plants and animals species.
  6. Ozone Depletion: Chlorofluorocarbons, hydro chlorofluorocarbons emitted from refrigerators and other electronic devices are depleting the protective ozone layer because of which harmful UV rays from the sun can reach on the earth and cause skin and eye related problems. These rays affect the crops also.

DISEASES CAUSED DUE TO HARMFUL EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

Lung Disease: Asthma, COPD, Pneumonia, Emphysema, Bronchitis and Lung Cancer are few of the respiratory diseases caused by high levels of air pollution. The muscles in airways of the lungs contract, narrowing the airway (airway hyper reactivity) because of the pollutants present in the air.

  1. Asthma: Ground level ozone, sulfur dioxide, fine particulate matter and nitrogen oxide are the major air pollutants that trigger this disease. These pollutants constrict the smaller airways in the lungs and make breathing difficult which can set off a serious life threatening attack of asthma.
  2. COPD: Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are the common types of COPDs in which the air sacs lose their shape and become distended or floppy due to long term exposure to air pollutants. Sulfur dioxide and other combustible fossil fuels cause the airways to become inflamed and constricted, causing breathing difficulty and chest pain.
  3. Lung Cancer: Long term exposure to combustion generated fine particulate matter poses a significant risk of pulmonary cancer as a lot of carcinogenic particles are present in the polluted air which enters the body through inhalation and causes the abnormal growth of cells which can develop into tumors and impair the lungs.
  4. Eye Disease: Air pollution can affect the eyes in various ways from simple irritation and burning sensation to severe allergy. The most common symptoms are-
  • Dryness
  • Allergic reaction (eyelid swelling, inability to open eyes, conjunctivitis, ulcers)
  • Burning sensation,
  • Watery Eyes,
  • Ropy Discharge,
  • Itchiness,
  • Difficulty in vision due to watering and itching etc.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: Smog and lack of humidity in highly polluted areas lead to dry eyes in which either the tear production in the eyes are low or the evaporation of the tears is very high which ends up in inflamed eyes.

It has been reported that high levels of pollutants like nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide in the air make the tear film of the eyes more acidic.

Chronic Kidney Disease: Recent studies have shown that dust, dirt, smoke, soot and liquids in polluted air, when inhaled by people can enter into their bloodstream. When the air is taken in and the particles from the polluted air reach the kidney passing through the lungs via bloodstream, the filtration of blood is done by the kidney and during this process, these particles cause inflammation and oxidative stress within the blood-filtering organs. This makes the kidney unable to filter blood effectively and a person requires dialysis to stay alive.

On a worldwide basis several attempts are being made on personal, industrial and governmental levels to control the intensity of increase in the Air Pollution and regain a balance between the environmental gases. To see a better tomorrow, we need to take the challenge of eradicating air pollution which is one of the larger mirrors of man’s follies. To curb air pollution some major steps need to be taken as use of public mode of transportation, conservation of energy and forests, strongly implementing the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle as well as emphasis on clean energy resources.

  1. Garlic
  • Method 1: Crush garlic, extract its juice, mix with a little of honey at a ratio of 1 teaspoon of fluid garlic and 2 teaspoons of honey. You stir the mixture together, soak a soft cotton into the mixture but the cotton is not too wet, and then you tuck it into your nose 3 times a day. You can replace honey with sesame oil.
  • Method 2: The peeled garlic slices or crushes, and then soak in 1 liter white wine. You should maintain in a tight bottle, keep it in the cool place for 10 days. Occasionally you check and shake the bottle. When the wine gradually changes from white to saffron, you can drink. Drink one teaspoon of garlic wine 2 times a day in the morning and evening.
  • Method 3: You use 2 to 3 small cloves of garlic (each clove fit kid’s little finger) or 1 to 1.5 large cloves (black garlic, each clove fit adult’s middle finger). Depending on the person’s weight and age uses the reasonable amount of garlic.

  • Method 2: You treat sneezing by mixing 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 3 cloves of chopped garlic. If the taste of garlic makes it difficult to drink, you can replace by 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Dividing into 3 times a day is good for your nasal cavity. Otherwise, you can use this remedy for thicker eyebrows.
  1. Saline

Use saline is the easiest way and also very effective to washing away the bacteria causing runny nose. Using saline to clean the inside of the nostrils by mixing about ½ teaspoon of salt to and a cup of warm water. Then use cotton wool soak every drop of saline into the nose or directly drip in your nose. You should lightly inhale to make saline get into the nose further. Do not assume that saline will make you feel uncomfortable, on the contrary, it will make it easier to breathe and much more pleasant. You do this 3 times a day.

  1. Ageratum conyzoides
