Internet oversize Google has announced it will help Indian railways set up Wi-Fi broadband service at 500 railways stations in India over the next few years beginning with 100 stations in the initial phase of the project by 2016. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog, “Even with just the first 100 stations online, this project will make Wi-Fi available for more than 10 million people who pass through every day. This will rank it as the largest public Wi-Fi project in India, and among the largest in the world, by number of potential users”. Pichai also explained navigational, safety and other uses of Street View and Google Earth to Modi.
Google to Provide Wi-Fi Service at 500 Stations:-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the initiative during his visit to Google headquarters in California on Sunday. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that technology will bring qualitative change in life with time and through its proper utilisation. The service is planned for 100 stations at first before expanding. Modi took a tour of the Google campus seeing the latest products and forward-looking researchers. Howrah station is one of the busiest stations in the country which will be among the first group of 100 railway stations including New Delhi, Mumbai Central and Chennai Central and others to get free high-speed Wi-Fi as part of a project announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday. The total number of Stations where high-speed Wi-Fi will be available is slated to be nearly 400 Pichai said during the PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the company’s headquarters in the US. The 100 stations are likely to serve some 10 million users who pass through their precincts every day.
Pichai appreciated and encouraged Google to develop Apps which could benefit the common man as he participated in Hackathon under which its employees sat for 15 hours straight to devise such Apps for use in India. He also announced that Google will launch an Android next month enabling users to type in 11 Indian Languages Gujarati. There are a billion Indians yet to go online, so, we did like to help get these next billion Indians online and they can access the entire information and opportunity. Pichai shared Google’s plans, while narrating his own story about his student days while passing through Chennai Central station to get to his institute at Kharagpur (IIT).
